In order to provide a consistent standard for ranking causes of death coded under ICD-10, the National
Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) prepared a list of 113 selected causes of death, of which,
50 cause groups are eligible to be ranked as leading causes of death. For more information about
the NCHS rankings see Procedures for ranking causes of death
on the NCHS website. The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services routinely reports mortality data
on 33 cause of death groups based on the 50 rankable cause groups. This was done because some of the 50 causes
are rare in New Jersey, therefore they were combined into other categories.
The NJSHAD system uses the 33, 50, and 113 cause of death groups in the
Mortality Query Module
