Complete Indicator Profile of Deaths among Females

Definition

Deaths among persons identified as female on the death certificate

Numerator

Number of deaths among females

Denominator

Number of females in the population

Why Is This Important?

Analysis of mortality by gender is essential to the elimination of health disparities.

How Are We Doing?

The age-adjusted death rate among Black females is 27% higher than among White females, double the rate among Hispanic females, and nearly triple the rate among Asian females. The leading causes of death among females are heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic lower respiratory diseases (CLRD), and Alzheimer's disease.

How Do We Compare With The U.S.?

The death rate among New Jersey females is slightly lower than that of U.S. females.

What Is Being Done?

The New Jersey Office on Women's Health (OWH) works to raise awareness of women's health issues across the lifespan, serves as a resource for information and referrals, advocates for gender specific research, the development of effective programs to improve women's health and coordinates with existing programs and organizations that provide health services to the women of New Jersey.
