Indicator Profile of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

Why Is This Important?

In the United States, and in New Jersey, SIDS is the leading cause of death for infants between the ages of one month and one year (post-neonatal period) and the third leading cause of deaths from birth to one year, exceeded only by short gestation and low birth weight and by congenital anomalies. Although rates have declined by over 50% since the start of public health efforts to reduce risk factors associate with SIDS, SIDS accounted for 2,461 infant deaths in the United States and 45 in New Jersey, in 2007.
